Boost your child’s STEM (science, technology, engineering, and math) skills with Ontario Tech University’s Engineering Outreach!

In this workshop, students will be learning about the importance of software engineering. We will then use scratch to learn how to make a maze! If you want to save your game when we are done, or you want to play with scratch before the workshop please make a scratch account: https://scratch.mit.edu/

Required materials:

  • Desktop/Laptop with an Internet connection: For Google Meet and to run the coding program. It is recommended students use a split screen, so they can view the Google Meet and scratch screen on the same device.
    *It is not recommended for youth to do the coding on a tablet.
  • Browser: Please use one of the following compatible browsers: Chrome, Edge, Firefox & Safari. Internet Explorer is not supported.
  • Scratch website: This program is free to use in your internet browser.

  • Maze background: To code a maze game in scratch it is easiest to use an already made maze. To find one you can do a Google images search and choose a maze with solid black lines and a transparent/white background.

Boost your child’s STEM (science, technology, engineering, and math) skills with Ontario Tech University’s Engineering Outreach!

In this workshop, students will learning about the importance of geometry and math in building while exploring Leonardo da Vinci's bridge building designs. The three topics covered will be angles, gravity and design principles. Students will then be tasked with designing and building their own building using any recycled materials on hand.

Required materials:

  • Popsicle sticks, straws or rolled newspaper
  • Tape, string or glue (please only use hot glue with adult supervision)
  • Scissors
  • Cardboard (optional)
  • Other recyclable materials (optional)

Lesson: The Importance of Facial Expressions in Communication

Students will be programming a virtual micro:bit to demonstrate human facial expressions. This activity will teach students programming skills and the importance of facial expressions in communication. We will also learn about American Sign Language (ASL) and communicating emotions through masks.

Explore how things move! Discover the science behind a magic trick, defy gravity by creating a balancing bird, and engineer an elastic racer to chase down Newton’s laws. We’ll be on the move!
 

Scientists in Situ Workshops

These virtual workshops include a science kit, which can be picked up at Courtice, Newcastle, or Orono Branch in advance! An email including the link to the Microsoft Teams meeting will be sent to attendees in advance of the virtual event.
