[Ages 7 to 13]

Online via Google Meet
Saturday, May 29th
10:30 a.m. to 12:00 p.m.

Advanced registration required for each workshop; space is limited. Register online or by phone.

Boost your child’s STEM (science, technology, engineering, and math) skills with Ontario Tech University’s Engineering Outreach!

In this workshop, students will be learning about the Mars Helicopter, and creating a Mars helicopter video game in scratch! The Mars Helicopter (which is named Ingenuity) hitched a ride to Mars on the Perseverance Rover, and it has completed five successful flights. Ingenuity is the first robot to complete controlled flight in the extremely thin atmosphere of Mars.

If you want to save your work when we are done, or you want to play with scratch before the workshop please make a scratch account: https://scratch.mit.edu/

For more information, please see the Parent Communication information sheet.

Required materials:

  • Desktop/Laptop with an Internet connection: For Google Meet and to run the coding program. It is recommended students use a split screen, so they can view the Google Meet and scratch screen on the same device.
*It is not recommended for youth to do the coding on a tablet.
  • Browser: Please use one of the following compatible browsers: Chrome, Edge, Firefox & Safari. Internet Explorer is not supported.
  • Scratch website: This program is free to use in your internet browser.

Please ensure the link works before attending the session. If you cannot access the site, please contact ellen.james@ontariotechu.ca
  • Background and Mars Helicopter Images: To create our video game we will want to use a realistic background and sprite. Please visit the following websites to download the Mars background and Mars Helicopter Sprite (Right click on each image, and select "Save image as...")
