Elevator Accessibility Improvements

The Municipality of Clarington officially unveiled accessibility upgrades to elevators at the Municipal Administrative Centre (MAC) and the Clarington Public Library Bowmanville Branch.

“We are continually striving to create a barrier-free community, where residents of all abilities have access to our buildings and services,” said Clarington Mayor Adrian Foster.

The upgrades include audio announcements and Braille to allow those with visual impairments to access the elevators without assistance. The audio announcements let people know when the elevator has arrived and what floor they are on, while the Braille makes it easier to select the correct button.

The Municipality of Clarington received a $16,940 grant to renovate and make improvements to the elevators. The project was funded in part by the Government of Canada’s Enabling Accessibility Fund which provides funding for projects to ‘ensure greater accessibility and opportunity for Canadians with disabilities in their communities and workplaces.’
