Essential Skills Workshops

Put yourself on the road to success with professional and certification courses! Gain the skills you need to meet the needs and challenges of your future academic and career goals.

All workshops are presented in partnership with Durham College, and are offered at no charge.

Advanced registration required; space is limited. Register online, in person, or by phone. Registrants must be 18+ years.
 

Safe Food Handlers Certification

Session 2: Newcastle Branch; Thursday, March 8; 10:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m.; or
Session 3: Bowmanville Branch; Monday, March 19; 9:30 a.m. to 3:30 p.m.

Learn the safe way to handle and prepare food for a variety of kitchens and environments, including restaurants, take-out, catering, food trucks, or working directly with high-risk groups such as children and the elderly. 

Participants must complete one full six-hour course and an evaluation to achieve certification. The Food Safety Training Certificate meets the requirements of the Ontario Ministry of Health and Long Term Care and all Health Departments across the province.

 

SMART Serve Certification

Session 2: Newcastle Branch; Thursday, March 15; 10:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m.; or
Session 3: Bowmanville Branch; Wednesday, March 21; 9:30 a.m. to 3:30 p.m.

Learn how to implement a responsible alcohol service and maintain a safe environment. 

Participants must complete one full six-hour course and an evaluation to achieve certification. The Smart Serve Responsible Alcohol Beverage Service Training Program is approved by the Alcohol and Gaming Commission of Ontario (AGCO) as a server training program for the Ontario hospitality industry.

 

Basic Health & Safety and WHMIS

Ensure the safety of employers and employees with WHMIS (Workplace Hazardous Materials Information System). 

Participants must complete the full six-hour course and an evaluation to achieve certification.

 

First Aid

9:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m.

Keep your family and those around you safe. Obtain your Standard First Aid and CPR-C certificate. 

Participants must complete the full two-day course and an evaluation to achieve certification.

 

Computer Essentials

Get a basic introduction to computers! Learn about operating systems, the Internet, email, keyboarding, and Microsoft Office in this eight-class workshop session.
